“Catfish” and “I’m Still Here” – where reality and fiction blurr

A real documentary about faux people...

...a faux documentary about real people?

The last two films I saw were films that while watching started as one thing and turned out to be completely different. A large part of this is because of the expectations I had when going in. I had more preconceived notions about these two films than I have had about any other film I’ve seen. Partly due to the way pop culture has guided my thinking as a whole these past couple years…not even I am safe from the undertow.

Both Catfish and I’m Still Here deal with reality; the false reality created by the world of technology and media, and they utilize their mediums skillfully to keep the audience a little uncertain as to how real the events unfolding actually are. I knew very little about what these films actually were when going in to see them. I had not read that the filmmakers of I’m Still Here came out that it was a hoax until after seeing it. I still don’t know how real or not Catfish is; my guess is its truly a documentary. It doesn’t matter to me in either instance. (more…)

“Gone Baby Gone”; the Afflecks’ love child

gone baby gone

The thing that sticks with you the most in Gone Baby Gone isn’t just how good the movie is, but how the movie ends. In a matter of five minutes and one scene you can tell how the the main character’s life will turn out in regards to the character he’s left with. The main character I speak of is Private Detective Patrick Kenzie played with brooding naivety one second and a calm anger with a peppering of necessary violence the next by the wonder boy of the year Casey Affleck. Casey plays the last moments of the scene as someone who realizes that while every one else might have been correct, he was still right, and he will have to give the rest of his life to make it work. I know that’s incredibly vague, but hopefully it will spark enough interest in the few readers that read this to want to go see the film. The final shot in itself is so quietly moving it’s worth the 11 to 14 dollars admission. (more…)

“The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”

assassination of jesse james

(As a note all I knew about this film while walking into it was that it starred Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck and was shot by the unapproachable DP Roger Deakins. If you wish to have that same surprise, then don’t read on. For those of you who do I won’t give away much, except that Jesse James is assassinated.)

I love long titles to movies but that didn’t stop my friend and I from joking while walking into the theatre about it. We could remember the first part The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward… and then we’d mumble into silence, truly a good laugh. After having seen this film I don’t think I’ll ever forget his name, …Rober Ford, though whether or not he was a coward should be left up to you. (more…)
