“Iron Man”: Keeping it Raucous

May 10, 2008

Iron Man

It was too packed. I always try and tell people on big opening weekends that we need to leave early if we want a good seat. Today every open seat had a hand resting on it or a purse. 15 Minutes before Iron Man and we couldn’t seat four people together. The next one was sold out. But the mall just down the street had one…2 hours later in line at the mall. I hate malls.

With the promise of stadium seating, leg room and AC only two hours ago I was thrust into a theatre with a screen no bigger than the size of my friend’s widescreen television set, my arms pinned together by the plastic arm rests on either side of me, leg room a newborn baby would love and a group of fellow moviegoers behind me only a deaf person would enjoy.

Within forty seconds everything around me disappeared and all there was was Iron Man. (more…)

“Street Kings”

Street Kings

David Ayer’s (Harsh Times, Training Day) new film Street Kings starring Keanu Reeves opened about a month ago and is pretty much gone from the cineplexes.

Why? Because it wasn’t a great film, but it wasn’t a bad film. It wasn’t a film that shouted for me to write about it after I had seen it, just to get around to it when I had the time. So here I am. I’m sure you can feel the enthusiasm.

Certainly it was a mediocre film, but not because of Keanu Reeves. People like to throttle him with less than flattering descriptions…”wooden” is one that comes to mind. I don’t think Keanu is wooden. And I don’t think he was the worst thing in this film.

“My Blueberry Nights”: An Odyssey of Great Portions

My Blueberry Nights

Wong Kar-Wai can make anything look sensual. In all my life I’ve never seen a blueberry pie that made me want to kiss someone, but the way he shoots the ice cream melting down the sides of a mound of blueberries is so romantic you want to go out, find a girl and spend the rest of your life with her and that’s in the first five minutes.

In his new film, My Blueberry Nights, that romantic feeling is unloosed upon the audience. It however begins to wear after awhile before coming back to a redeeming final few minutes of sumptuous filmmaking.

“Leatherheads”

Leatherheads

Leatherheads the new film direct by and starring that most affable of affable stars George Clooney is a fanciful lark. One that I enjoyed, sometimes tremendously, and certainly enough. With Renee Zellweger, John Krasinski and Jonathon Pryce in tow, Clooney shoots for the screwball comedies of yesteryear and hits pretty darn close; a relative once removed.

“Run, Fat Boy, Run”…away from this movie

April 10, 2008

Run Fat Boy Run

First off I could only sit through half of the movie (and I never walk out), so to be fair this will only be half a review.

Run Fatboy Run is about nothing. It does though involve some characters that talk to each other and that do things, all of which are very uninteresting and unfunny. Did it matter to me how the movie ended when nothing mattered to me while I was watching it? Simple answer, no.

“21”

21

Within five minutes you 21 is going to fizzle and it does. Based upon the true story and subsequent book about some MIT students that get involved in a blackjack card counting scheme in Vegas should be involving enough, but the only thing you actually buy in this movie is that people count cards. The character’s relationships, the step-by-step progression through the story, you don’t buy any of it, and the biggest fault of the film is – it’s boring!
